His Anniversary Surprise Was Perfect — Except for One Small Detail

After twelve years of forgetting our anniversary, my husband finally remembered.
He booked the restaurant — the good one, not the one with the sticky menus. There were flowers. He was wearing a jacket. He had even made a short speech in the car on the way there, which he delivered to the steering wheel because he got embarrassed looking at me.
I was honestly close to tears.
Then the waiter asked, “So, how many years are we celebrating?”
And my husband proudly said the date out loud.
I checked my phone. I checked it again, the way you check a lottery ticket that is almost right.
“Sweetheart,” I said, “our anniversary is next month.”
The table went quiet. Twelve years of forgetting, and the one time he remembered, he remembered four weeks early.
He looked at the flowers. He looked at the jacket. He looked at the bread basket like it might contain legal advice.
Then he straightened his napkin, nodded slowly, and said:
“I know. After twelve years of getting it wrong, I decided to start early this time. Consider tonight the practice run.”
The waiter, who deserved a raise for his silence alone, simply wrote something down and walked away.
When the cake arrived, it said “Happy Anniversary” in chocolate script. My husband pointed at it and told the waiter, “Same table, four weeks from now. And this time, act surprised.”
Here’s the thing: he forgot for twelve years. This year, he accidentally celebrated twice.
I’m not correcting him ever again.
