Ingredients

  • 1 can (14 ounces) sweetened condensed milk
  • 3 cups semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 pinch salt

Method

  1. Line an 8×8-inch baking pan with parchment paper, leaving an overhang on the sides. Lightly butter the pan to help hold the parchment in place.
  2. Add the sweetened condensed milk, semi-sweet chocolate chips, butter, and salt to a large microwave-safe bowl.
  3. Microwave the mixture in 30-second intervals, stirring well after each interval.
  4. Continue heating and stirring until the chocolate is mostly melted and smooth, about 2 minutes total. The remaining chocolate should melt from the residual heat.
  5. Stir in the vanilla extract until the fudge mixture is smooth and glossy.
  6. Immediately pour the mixture into the prepared pan and spread it evenly with an offset spatula.
  7. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight, until completely set.
  8. Lift the fudge from the pan using the parchment overhang and cut it into squares with a sharp knife or bench scraper

Notes

  • An 8×8-inch pan creates thicker fudge pieces. A larger pan will produce thinner pieces.
  • Do not overheat the chocolate. Short microwave intervals help prevent burning.
  • Stir well between each heating interval because the residual heat will continue melting the chocolate.
  • Semi-sweet chocolate is recommended for a balanced flavor. Milk chocolate may take longer to set.
  • For variations, add chopped nuts, crushed cookies, or flaky sea salt before refrigerating.
  • Store the finished fudge in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
  • For gifting, arrange the chilled fudge pieces in a parchment-lined gift box.
