Ingredients

  • 4 oz vodka (120 ml), chilled
  • 2 oz chocolate liqueur (60 ml)
  • 2 oz heavy cream or half-and-half (60 ml)
  • 1 tablespoon chocolate syrup for the glass
  • 1 teaspoon unsweetened cocoa powder for dusting (optional)
  • Ice
  • chocolate shavings, a maraschino cherry, or a chocolate truffle for garnish

Method

  1. Chill two martini glasses or coupes in the freezer for at least 10 minutes.
  2. Drizzle chocolate syrup around the inside of each chilled glass.
  3. Fill a cocktail shaker with plenty of ice.
  4. Add the vodka, chocolate liqueur and cream (plus a pinch of salt if using).
  5. Shake vigorously for 15 to 20 seconds until the shaker is frosty.
  6. Strain evenly into the prepared glasses, dust with cocoa if desired, garnish and serve immediately.

Notes

Use a clean, mid-priced vodka; vanilla vodka adds a soft, pleasant note. For a richer drink, add 1/2 oz white crème de cacao; for a lighter one, use half-and-half and skip the syrup drizzle. Mocha variation: add 1/2 oz cold espresso or coffee liqueur to the shaker. Do not make ahead: serve within minutes of shaking, while the glass is still frosty.
