Laundry Stripping Soak

A bathtub deep-clean soak of borax, washing soda and powdered detergent that pulls detergent residue, fabric softener coating and minerals out of towels, sheets and workout clothes.
Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 4 hours
Total Time 4 hours 10 minutes
Servings: 1 bathtub load
Cuisine: DIY / Home

Ingredients

  • ½ cup about 120 g borax
  • ½ cup about 110 g washing soda (sodium carbonate, not baking soda)
  • ¼ cup powdered laundry detergent such as Tide
  • Hottest tap water to fill a standard bathtub halfway to two-thirds
  • 1 load already-washed towels, sheets, or workout clothes

Method

  1. Fill a standard bathtub with the hottest tap water and stir in the borax, washing soda and detergent until fully dissolved.
  2. Submerge the clean laundry completely, pushing out air pockets.
  3. Soak 4–6 hours, stirring and agitating every hour with a long spoon.
  4. Drain the tub and squeeze out each piece well.
  5. Run a rinse-only machine cycle (or a full wash with no detergent), then dry as usual.

Notes

Not for wool, silk, delicates, leather, or items that bleed dye; test darks first.
Keep powders and the soaking tub away from children and pets.
Never mix bleach or vinegar into this solution.
Murky water is normal — it is the buildup leaving the fabric.
Half batch: ¼ cup borax, ¼ cup washing soda, 2 tablespoons detergent, for a top-loader soak or large bucket.
