Prep Time 5 minutes
Cook Time 10 minutes
Total Time 20 minutes
Cuisine: American

Ingredients

For the chai concentrate:
  • 2 cups water
  • 4 black tea bags
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 tablespoon grated fresh ginger
  • 8 whole cloves
  • 8 green cardamom pods lightly crushed
  • 2 star anise
  • 1 teaspoon black peppercorns
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar or honey
For each latte:
  • ½ cup chai concentrate
  • ¾ cup cold milk 2% like Starbucks, or your choice
  • Ice
  • Pinch of ground cinnamon optional

Method

  1. Simmer the water with all the spices for 5 minutes.
  2. Remove from the heat, add the tea bags, and steep 5 minutes.
  3. Remove the tea bags and stir in the sugar until dissolved.
  4. Strain the concentrate and refrigerate until cold.
  5. Fill a tall glass with ice.
  6. Pour in ½ cup concentrate, then ¾ cup cold milk.
  7. Stir, dust with cinnamon, and serve.

Notes

The Starbucks grande ratio is roughly half concentrate, half milk — adjust to taste.
Concentrate keeps up to 1 week in a sealed jar in the fridge.
Never boil the tea bags; boiling makes the chai bitter.
Add a shot of espresso for a dirty chai.
